ultraVU-MTPro is part of an advanced, high magnification zoom lens series

The ultraVU zoom lenses have been specially developed by Ultramacro Ltd in collaboration with some of the top quality lens manufacturers to bridge the gap for photographers wanting lenses that span from macro to ultramacro to microscopic magnifications.
These lenses are unique - no other purpose-made high magnification lens systems for digital cameras have the following features:

Our zoom lenses do it all.  Each lens has a range of optional auxiliary lens attachments called auxiliary objectives that change both the range of zoom magnifications and the working distance.  Additionally with some models you can add any microscope objective.

There are 3 models in the range, ultraVU-EL, ultraVU-MTPro and ultraVU-TUR.  All are suitable for cropped and full frame sensors and can be supplied with all common camera mounts.

We offer a huge range of useful accessories to help you to obtain fantastic images of even the smallest subject.

Some helpful explanations:

Zoom Magnification
The zoom adjustment ring displays the nominal magnification factors for this part of the lens system.  In this lens the zoom range shows 0.7X to 4.5X or 5X.  The true magnification values when projected to a display are at least 8X greater dependent on the camera sensor and display size.  At high magnifications it is more useful to know the diameter of the field of view which is shown in the tables in the ultraVU brochure.  When you add an auxiliary objective the magnification range is altered in proportion to the value on the objective and the working distance is also changed.  For instance the 0.5X objective halves the zoom magnifications and increases the working distance and the 2X doubles the zoom magnifications and reduces the working distance.

Working Distance
This is the distance from the bottom of the lens (housing) to the point on the subject that is in focus.  This can be made longer by adding a reducing magnification auxiliary objective (eg 0.5X) or made shorter by adding a high magnification (eg 2X) auxiliary objective.

Optics
The ultraVU-EL lens has plan achromatic internal lenses which produce a flatter field and reduced chromatic aberration.
The ultraVU-MTPro and ultraVU-TUR have plan APOchromatic internal optics which have more colour corrections, improve colour fidelity and a greater flatness of field.

The ultraVU series of lenses are unlike most photographic lenses on the market, in fact because of their high magnification ranges they can be considered more like microscopes.  For this reason the way they are used is more like a microscope.

General Points to Note

1) There is no electronic connection to the camera

2) The light reaching the camera is controlled entirely by adjusting the illumination intensity

3) Focussing is achieved by changing the position of the lens and subject relative to each other

4) For optimum results focus stacking is a recommended technique and all of these lenses have been thoroughly tested to make sure they are compatible

HINTS, TIPS & FACTS:

  • Generally speaking at the higher magnifications it is easier to mount the lenses vertically over the subject if at all possible
  • Start with lower magnifications, it gets much more tricky as you use higher magnifications
  • Moving the subject into the right position requires fine controls, make sure you have a good stage or sample holding system
  • Use the lenses in a stable environment, even someone walking past can upset your imaging
  • Mount everything on a stable surface, altering the focus can create vibration
  • As with all photography lighting is important, even more so at high magnifications
  • A dark background can be extremely effective, especially with hairy specimens
  • Use a Z-motorised rail or motorised focus control to capture a series of partially focussed images for focus stacking if necessary.  Remember you can mount the subject onto the motorised  stage, it does not have to be the camera that moves.  It can often be easier this way
  • The higher the magnification the harder it is to achieve a sharp image.  Do not expect the crispness you can achieve with your landscape or portrait lens.  To achieve that at high magnification becomes progressively more difficult no matter how good your optical system is
  • Undoubtedly there are better optical systems but they cost many, many times more than these lenses. Ultramacro are experts in the field of microscopy, we supply thousands of microscope imaging systems each year.  If you need a more advanced and inevitably much more expensive system we supply almost all makes and models of microscopes with the appropriate camera to microscope adapter
